Boggo Road Markets

I went to school next door to the old Boggo Road Jail, at Dutton Park State School, so I always wondered what the markets would be like set within the confines of the now heritage buildings of the former Boggo Road Gaol. If your looking for an easy Sunday morning look no further then these markets. Sure they’re small but very spaced out and room to walk around which is always nice at markets. Great range of fresh fruit and veg at great prices. Nice atmosphere with live music, make sure you visit the lady selling loose tea! Also, these markets are free with plenty of easy parking.

It is a lovely place to visit during the crisp and clear mornings of Autumn. While there’s no access to the gaol itself, the old buildings make an interesting backdrop to the stalls. There is also the new EcoSciences building nearby, and well-tended lawns and gardens all around, the market looked very festive in the morning sun. Boggo Road has some great produce stalls such as bespoke bread in many varieties, lots of fresh fruit and veggies, decent coffee, and a lots of delicious food stalls.

My Food Favourites:

The Unwaxed Apple Stall. Beautiful fresh unwaxed apples. The owner is more than happy to talk you through what apples are in season and will explain why he sells his apples unwaxed.

The Banana Stall. Bananas from Caboolture. Organic and inexpensive. Sweetest and creamiest I have ever eaten.

The Juicy Fig. Gluten free sweets and baked goodies.

The Gozleme Stall. This stall takes me back to my days living in Sydney where you could find this turkish bread treat easily. The turkish flat bread is made with spinach, feta, meat and vegetables (a variety of options were available), all for $8. Very very filling and yummy.

Chinese Dumpling Stall. 7 dumplings for $10. Either vegetarian, prawn or pork options. Totally yum. Plump and tasty dumplings.

Gourmet Buffalo Pies. Mybrother’s favourite stall sells buffalo pies and rolls from a buffalo farm in Kilkivan. Apparently much healthier for you than the beef variety, these pies are rich, tasty and moreish. A definite choice for all the meat lovers out there.

The music scene at the Boggo Road Markets was really a standout, with several great performers that stood out. There was an array of other market stall staples such as a ukelele stall, clothing stalls, craft, jewellery stalls etc. I can recommend these markets if you are looking for a good feed and a bit of a shop, without the big crowds like some of the other markets around town. The Boggo Road Markets is open Sunday mornings. 6am to 1pm.
